Ffestiniog Railway Society

The Ffestiniog Railway Society exists to support the oldest independent railway in the world (being founded by an Act of Parliament in 1832) – now a historic and world-class tourist attraction.

With over 5,000 members, many of them active volunteers, the Society was established as the Festiniog Railway Society Limited in 1954 by preservation pioneers who wanted to play a role in the rebirth of the Ffestiniog Railway (FR). The Society quickly found the role of providing volunteers and finance to early rebuilding efforts, a role which is still crucial today. The Society became a registered charity in 1997, now allowing the benefit of claiming Gift Aid on donations and subscriptions.

Membership is open to all and includes travel benefits on the FR and the quarterly magazine. You can be an annual member, buy it for someone else or even become a life member.

The Society currently supports volunteering in many ways on the railway, funding the purpose-built volunteers’ hostel, providing a full time warden. The Society has also recently been pleased to fund the re-entry into traffic of flagship ‘Double Fairlie’ locomotive Merddin Emrys, new and rebuilt carriages, permanent way materials and many other volunteer projects.
